STEAM STORIES

A video project to engage young people with careers in the STEAM sector

STEAM STORIES is a creative video project to promote STEAM careers to secondary school students and bridge the gap between higher education and employers.

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. It’s like STEM but includes creative thinking and offers new avenues to problem solving and innovation.

The STEM sector is strong in the South East constituting 10.4% of employment compared to 7.5% nationally.

But there is a national skills shortages costing the STEM sector £1.5B per annum (2018).

STEAM Stories aims to engage a more diverse range of students with robust high wage jobs and help plug the skills shortages holding back economic growth in the South East.

We are seeking employers looking to showcase their exciting job opportunities and engaging work environment to the next generation of STEAM workers.

We will create a set of short videos for each employer featuring their employees explaining their career path into the sector and why they are so passionate about what they do.

The video series will be hosted online and made available for schools to use in lessons to support their employability commitments and meet the Gatsby benchmarks.

The videos will engage students with the broad ranges of STEAM careers available to them and grow awareness of local employment opportunities.

Employers will demonstrate their commitment to developing STEAM careers, grow presence and engagement in the local community and tap into the skills pipeline at an early stage.

It is also a vital opportunity to show young people diverse role models that resonate with them and that they can aspire towards.

This project is tuned into young people’s tastes. Approximately two thirds of 13- to 21-year-olds watch YouTube daily.

The tone, format and creative elements are focused to make the videos even more appealing to the target audience.

Schools and higher education providers in the region are very excited to see STEAM Stories come to life. We currently have a captive audience of over 10,000 students waiting to engage with employers’ stories.

We are actively recruiting employers from across Kent to participate in the project and support the drive to promote STEAM sector jobs to the next generation.
